The Man & The Halfling

Recommended Posts

In the dark of the night, a cloaked and hooded man slipped out of the gate leading from the royal grounds. The figure ghosted into the shadows before the city guard noted his passage. Less than three-dozen heartbeats later found the man seating himself at a table in a shadowed corner of the Raging Boar Tavern. Still hooded, he ordered two pints from the startled waitress. A halfling, likewise hooded, came in the tavern, moved to the corner, and then slipped into the nearest chair.

"I didn't see you," The waitress commented. As she set down the drinks, her gaze took in the halfling.

The man nodded and paid the waitress without comment. The waitress left. Man and halfing took sips from their mugs. Across the tavern, a bard sang a mournful love song and accompanied herself on a lute. The two seemed to listen for a few moments.

"People are angry and afraid." Speaking softly, the halfling broke their silence.

The man nodded.

"Rightfully so." The man spoke a mere breath above a whisper. "Their movements are insidious. It's possible that people you've known and trusted for years are working for them."

"Most likely strangers." The halfling shook his head. "It's easy enough to sneak about. No one pays much heed of travelers. Not that I would change that."

"Aye," The hooded man nodded. "We would be the worse for it."

"Would be like them." The halfling added.

Both fell silent. The man lifted his mug and took a drink.

"You want us to organize something?" The halfling broke the silence again.

"An answer to the latest attack." The man said, his voice tense. "Send a message."

The halfling leaned forward, seeming to hang on the man's every word.

"Do whatever you can," The man said, loud enough that the waitress turned to stare. "We will not tolerate attacks on our citizens"
